Afghanistan Dramatic Comeback Against India

Afghanistan’s national football team staged a dramatic comeback to defeat India 2-1 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. This victory marks their first win against India since 2013.

In a thrilling match, Afghanistan initially tied with India in the first leg. However, in the return match, India took the lead with a penalty in the 38th minute after a mistake by Afghanistan’s captain, Islamuddin Amiri. Despite this setback, Ashley Westwood’s team fought back and equalized in the 70th minute through a goal by Rahmat Akbari. The Afghan team continued to press forward and was rewarded with a penalty in the 88th minute, which was expertly converted by Sharif Mohammad, securing their first victory since 2013 against India.

This triumph not only solidifies Afghanistan’s position in the qualifying competition but also opens up opportunities for them to progress to the Asian Football Nations Cup and potentially qualify for the next round of World Cup qualification tournaments. The Afghanistan national team’s upcoming matches will be held against Qatar and Kuwait on the 6th and 11th of June 2024.
