Taliban Reacts to Iran’s Attack on Israeli Soil
The Taliban’s foreign ministry stated support for Iran’s recent drone and missile attack on Israel, labeling it as a “legitimate defensive measure.” The statement condemned Israel for the alleged “genocide” of over 30,000 civilians in Gaza and urged global and regional cooperation to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Iran’s attack, reportedly in retaliation for an assault on its consulate in Damascus, marked the first direct strike on Israeli soil from Iranian territory. Despite Iran’s efforts, Israel managed to intercept and neutralize the majority of the incoming missiles and drones with the assistance of several countries including the US, France, and Jordan. Only minor damage was reported at one air base in southern Israel. It is also reported that twelve individuals were injured as a result of the attacks and are now receiving medical treatment.
President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran defended the attack as a justified act of self-defense and warned of severe repercussions for any Israel or its allies retaliation.
In contrast, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and others condemned Iran’s attacks and expressed solidarity with Israel.
Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, has also denounced the attack on Israel and stressed the imperative of avoiding further conflict.
Asian nations, including Russia, China, India, and Saudi Arabia, called for restraint to ease tensions in the Middle East. Japan, however, condemned Iran for the attacks and has voiced concern over escalating hostilities in the region following Iran’s assault.
